Support for Windows Mobile

In addition to the Symbian clients, we've got a new client for Windows Mobile, too. It is not yet as well-polished as the Symbian version, but we still hope that you find it usable!

Due to the large difference between Windows Mobile phones, we can't guarantee that it works on every device, but we've had success with at least these devices:
  • Samsung SGH-i780
  • HTC Touch Diamond
  • HTC Touch Pro
  • Sony-Ericsson XPERIA X1
It may work on other Windows Mobile 6 devices too, so if you're feeling adventurous you may want to give it a shot anyway. Please let us know about your experiences!

New Symbian Clients

Today we released new versions of the mobile clients for Symbian. The main new features are:
  • Much improved video quality on many S60 3rd ed phones
  • It is now Symbian Signed on S60 3rd ed, so you won't have any problems with "Certificate error" when installing it
  • GPS-based geotagging built in, without having to manually sign and install separate components
  • Network based positioning on many S60 3rd ed phones, no GPS required
  • Assorted UI details and bug fixes
  • Auto updating, so you won't have to manually fetch new versions later on (we've got a lot of new things planned for you!)
Since the earlier versions weren't Symbian Signed, the new signed version can't bring over your settings from the previous version, but later updates will work just fine.

Stay tuned for more...

Me, Pouria and Tom are heading over to Berlin for the Web2.0 Expo together with Polopoly. While in Berlin we´re gonna meet up with the always inspiring Phil Campbell (http://me.dm). Both guys are from England and are very active social media guys and do a lot of video and videoblogging. You can see some of their stuff over on their rezpondr sites (http://medm.rezpondr.com and http://documentally.rezpondr.com) and those will be updating over the coming days - most of the live stuff will be shot and done using Bambuser!

We´re really looking forward to meet Phil and Christian in real life! Expect some great interviews, great folks and some cutting edge tech-terms you´ve never heard before!

For you all of you who are in Berlin, visit us at the Polopoly stand or catch us in the hall. If we´re nearby a bar, come have a beer with us and chat about anything you like!

Integration with Friendfeed, Identi.ca and Tumblr

Early on we added notification options for the microblogging services Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce, so that your friends on these platforms get to know when you have something to show them via Bambuser. Many of you have appreciated this and now it's time to throw a few more services into the mix.

In the last few days we added support for Friendfeed, a social network aggregator, Identi.ca, a node in the Laconica open source microblogging initiative and Tumblr, a short-form scrapbook-like blogging service.

On all of these platforms we post one notification for each of your broadcasts. In most cases a text-only post with the title you've set for the broadcast and a link to the video. The Friendfeed API however, allows us to post a preview thumbnail, which we do when possible. Tumblr gives us the freedom to put the video player in the post so that your visitors can watch the broadcast directly on your blog.

If you are using any of these services, try this out via your settings page and let us know what you think!

Bambuser to be tested in public safety

Together with Jonas Landgren and Fredrik Bergstrand from Viktoria Institute, Bambuser will be exploring the usage of mobile live video for public safety.

A new research project on using live video streaming to improve emergency response work. This new project started 1st of September and is a collaboration between Viktoria Institute, the Road Traffic Safety Institute – SAFER, Lindholmen Science Park´s Security Arena, the Swedish Road Authority, the Rescue Services in Gothenburg and the Regional Paramedic Services.

The project seeks to explore how live video data from mobile and stationary cameras could be used in order to provide improved situational awareness and collaboration among the response actors involved in traffic accidents response work.

In this project, Bambuser will provide the live mobile video broadcasting capabilities necessary to provide on-location live video that will be broadcasted across the response actor network. Having Bambuser as a key technology and service provider is fundamental for the practical field experiments that will be conducted with the end-user organizations later this autumn.

Press Conference: Kistefos Venture Capital invests in Bambuser

Press Release Malmö July 24

Norwegian Kistefos Venture Capital invest Swedish Bambuser

The Swedish video service Bambuser, which makes it possible for anyone to broadcast live video directly from their mobile phones out to thousands of viewers on the Internet, Norwegian Kistefos Venture Capital is now as a partner.

"Now we are getting the financial means to develop and make Bambuser global," says Bambusers founder and visionary leader Måns Adler. "Bambuser is similar to YouTube, only live, and we already have thousands of users, from the blog sphere for example sometimesdaily.com´s Amanda Congdon and musicians such as Adam Tensta, to major media players like "Svenska Dagbladet", "France24" and MySpace Nordic.

"Bambuser is one of the most exciting projects right now, says new chairman Alex Munch-Thore." Within Kistefos we are studying closely how quickly the media landscape is changing. Bambuser would have been impossible to even imagine about a few years ago and, of course, we want to be a part of and invest in the future of media technology and its business opportunities. "

Måns Adler and Jonas Vig, as two of the founders of Bambuser, was listed by Internetworld already in april as this year's entrepreneurs and highlighted in Swedish business magazine "Veckans Affärer" as next up and rising stars on th swedish entrepreneurial scene. Now, they have taken a further step towards their vision.

"The cell phone is the hub of our lives today, and through our service it will be complete as the communication tool in the social media world. You can not just call, send e-mail, chat, surf with it. Now you can also broadcast video in real-time through your own mobile. Your friends can hold dialogue with you when you send and follow you in your daily life when you want. It may be on his way to an interview to show that you are nervous, when you tips of your girlfriend on his way to Tokyo, prom or as a press conference like today, "said Måns Adler.

Bambuser as a service is also a great asset and a strength for both internal communcation and external communication channel for business.

"It's a benefit to use Bambuser in our work. We have won many cases, thanks to the use of Bambuser as part of our creative suggestions and we have recommended many of our clients to use the service in different contexts," says Brit Stakston, kommunikationskonsult on JMW in Stockholm as early tested the service and who quickly congratulated Bambuser to the new opportunities that this will mean for the company.

The agreement was signed on tuesday and means that Kistefos Venture Capital becomes a partner and simultaneously makes a significant financial injection to the company. Alex Munch-Thore also becomes new chairman of the board. Kistefos invest up to 15 million swedish kronor (2.5 MUSD) on a pre-money valuation at 47.5 MSEK (approx. 8 MUSD)

Sending chat messages

Some of you using Mac OS X in combination with Firefox 3.0 Release Candidate 1 might have had problems submitting messages to the chat rooms. We are investigating why this combination of browser and OS does not respond to the enter key in our chat application. Firefox 3 RC1 on Windows is not affected, nor is any other browsers we have tried.

If you are affected by this, try using your mouse and click the newly added "send" button on the righthand side of the comment line instead.

More info in this Jaiku thread.

Views

Tom woke up early this saturday-morning, the result became that we now log how many viewers each video have. The system works as follows

The figures are calculated every 15 minutes.

Multiple hits from the same user (f.e. when going from the frontpage to the chat) counts as a single view.

Stats are calculated roughtly from late April 2008 onwards. Which is why you might appear to have close to no views on older videos. Older log data might be added down the road.

Still to come is realtime update of the viewer count when you are live.

Bo Hedin editor in chief for one of swedens largest newspaper "Svenska Dagbladet" have this to say about Bambuser.

Ugly-TV and Fine-TV

Yesterday SvD.se broadcasted real-time Internet television - only using a mobile phone. By a (relatively) ordinary mobile phone (Nokia N95) we described the dramatic scenery when Svea Hovrätt (the swedish court) delivered the judges in the so-called "Kungsholmenfallet". See the TV broadcast post here.

No, the quality is not the best. It jumps and stutters a lot. But the real, documentary value of this type of Internet television is great, we feel. It opens up entirely new possibilities for us - who do not own a traditional television channel - to show real-time video news tips, it is extremely fast, it's cheap and easy.

The system we use is called Bambuser, and is a newly developed technology that gives anyone - yes, anyone! -- Opportunity to make their own television broadcast. Learn what SvD.se's Development Group writes about Bambuser in their own developing blog and on yesterday's live coverage.

It is "ugly-TV" at its best. SvD.se's developing editor Ola Henriksson puts down the microphone and mobile in his pocket and bicycles to the court of appeal on Riddarholmen. He passes through SVT's and TV4's large broadcasting buses and follow the reporter Erik Sidenbladh when Erik tearing the attention of the judges and throws himself over the lawyers to get feedback.

Chat issues solved

Some of you might have had problems accessing the Bambuser chat lately. We solved the problem today so you should be back in the game now. Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused.

Adobe recently released version 9.0.124.0 of their flash browser plugin. From this version on, Adobe started enforcing their new more restrictive security policies regulating how a flash application is allowed to talk back to servers. The Bambuser chat widget happened to be affected as it is flash based and depends on usage of sockets when communicating with the chat server. Since Adobe does not push out updates automatically, we did not get reports of the problem right away.

Chat issues

Seems Adobe has rolled out a new flash version (9.0.124.0) which seems to have issues connecting to the chatserver.

We're working on resolving this asap.

Live-mix your own multi camera productions

A core vision from the start with Bambuser has been not only to empower everyone with the ability to broadcast live from a device that fits in a pocket, but also to give these mobile broadcasters the means to get together and create multi-camera productions, in order to allow for even better, more creative story-telling.

Today we take a few more steps on the path towards that goal, by introducing the Bambuser Live Mixer. UPDATE: The Live Mixer was discontinued in December 2009.

Early on we introduced the concept of events on bambuser.com, as a way of letting people pre-announce when they intend to broadcast things of importance.

Just little over a week ago we started pushing the event functionality more by giving it presence on the front page. We also added a way for people add their cameras to other's events. This concept of events and multiple cameras present on an event is what we extend today.

The user who sets up the event has access to the live mixer, which can be found by clicking a link on the event page. When launching the mixer all cameras are automatically loaded in, the event owner's camera being the default one.

When visiting the event owner's channel during the event (or an embedded player on blogs and other external sites) the visitors are presented with the mixed version of the broadcast i.e. visiting the event page is not necessary to get the enhanced experience.

To summarize, this is how you get started with the live mixer:

  1. Create a Bambuser account
  2. Log in and familiarize yourself with how to broadcast from your mobile phone or computer's webcam
  3. Set up an event
  4. Ask others to add their cameras to the event
  5. Go to the event page and open the mixer window from there

We like to hear what you think of the live mixer and it's workflow in this initial form - Don't hesitate to give us feedback.
