New version for Windows Mobile

Here at Bambuser we do not discriminate against anyone. Not even against people using Microsoft-based products. To prove this, we are now launching a new version of Bambuser for Windows Mobile!

First and foremost, this version adds the feature to upload complement data. This has been a very popular feature on Symbian-based phones, and we hope you will enjoy it on Windows Mobile too! It's possibly the best thing to be invented in Finland since rye bread.

Second, the new version supports high quality audio on a broader range of devices. This especially applies to phones manufactured by HTC.

Additionally, there are many small tweaks and fixes under the hood, which should give that little bit of extra performance we constantly try to squeeze out of mobile devices.

If you are new to complement uploading, let us explain: If your connection to the internet is weak when you broadcast live, pieces of the broadcast which can't be sent immediately are stored on your phone, keeping your latency low. When uploading this data afterwards, our servers get to business and start putting together all the pieces to improve your archived broadcast, giving on-demand viewers a smoother experience regardless of how slow and choppy your data connection was.

I can reveal that there is more coming for the Windows Mobile client in the future. Lots of top secret stuff that we (programmers at Bambuser) spend day and night working on, surviving only on the hope that we may one day venture outside the office again.

We are thankful for all feedback we get about existing or wanted features and have everything stored. We consider all suggestions when we decide what to work on.

Private mode has arrived!

Ohyes!

It has been the most requested feature... And finally it's here!
Now you can keep your cozy family gatherings for yourself or capture that private moment in life without sharing it with the whole world. Private mode is here! We will of course keep developing this function to add even more sophisticated privacy options.

From today - Friday 17th of April, the private function is available for all platforms (Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPhone) as well as for broadcasting via your browser. You will need to download a new version of the application to your phone.

To celebrate this we will launch a competition where we will give away a Nokia N85 to the producer of the craziest, funniest, most ridiculous or most creative broadcast that is NOT private :-) So giddy up and make your move and send us the link(s) at notprivate@bambuser.com. Don't forget to attach your preferred contact details. The competition will close May 4th. And hey! You may send us as many broadcasts as you wish...

Have a great weekend!

Support for FME and updated browser based broadcaster

This morning we rolled out a couple of nice additions to the Bambuser toolbox that should come in handy next time you broadcast from your computer.

We now allow everyone to use the Windows XP / Vista based desktop application "Flash Media Live Encoder" from Adobe, a tool dedicated to high quality live streaming with H.264 and VP6 codecs. Hook up your webcam or DV camera and shine! See the guide for details on how to get started.

Also new is a vastly overhauled browser based broadcaster. Next time you do casual webcam broadcasting you will have a much more user friendly interface to guide you. Look for the "Go live with your cam" button in your dashboard as usual. Kudos to Jasper who pulled this one off!

The dirty story of the iPhone app

A long time ago, we locked the door to our dev. dungeon in a dark cellar in the outskirts of Stockholm. The guy in the dungeon was left with only a handful of things; a computer, the internets, some vegetarian Swedish meatballs and an iPhone. The rules were as simple as clear;

- No sunlight until the iPhone app is released!

Leo was in charge of the whole thing. Many days later and after some assistance from Martin, Leo crawled out of the dungeon triumphing with an iPhone app installed on his phone.

- Nobody puts baby in a corner, he said and raised his hand towards the sky. We didn't actually had a clue what he meant but we were all damn happy to be able to stream live video from our iPhones!

So Ladies and Gentlemen without much further ado; The First version of the Bambuser iPhone app is yours to download via Cydia (requires a jailbreaked phone...) follow the steps here http://bambuser.com/help/iPhone. This version include chat functionality, GPS-support and works best over WiFi. Soon to come: Ability to upload dropped frames to always get a complete video, various video settings and other UI components. Oh, and yeah... prettier UI.

Have the time of your life!

The jury´s verdict
An invention that makes life easier and turns us all into mediaproducers; Tehcnology at its best.

Bambuser proudly present to you; Lowest latency with excellent on demand quality!

After countless hours of planning and hard work we're now proud to release a widely improved version of our application for Symbian S60 and UIQ.

Our main vision is, and has always been, to provide you all with the possibility to stream live broadcasts with the lowest latency possible. This focus is based on a strong belief that the major innovation of live video broadcasting is the ability to interact. Once you get too much latency that possibility is lost.

In order to keep you as close to real-time as possible we drop a few frames here and there which often still allows you to get a good video - even in poor conditions. However, in areas with very poor network or when loosing the connection every now and then, this has compromised the flow and quality of the on-demand video.

The new beauty; We now store any dropped frame or audio that can't get through while you're live and give you the option to complete your video with this data immediately after your live broadcast. This allows us to keep latency at an absolute minimum while also providing you with a perfect video when watching on demand!

Wonderful isn't it? If you have installed your existing client after 081021 ( version 1.02(2) or later) it will automatically remind you to download the latest version sometime soon. Still have an older version? Hey! What you're waiting for... go to bambuser.com/start and get it now! We'd love to hear what you think, try it out and send us your feedback at info@bambuser.com.

Cheers!

Spectrial, The Pirate Bay trial - Live on Bambuser

Monday 16th of February will be a hectic day in Stockholm, Sweden. This will be the first day of a trial that by many is assumed to be a never ending story. It's a waggish-raggish case that will be followed by supporters of both sides all over the world.

Our friends over at TPB are convinced to make this a spectacular event, hence we are not to expect the average drowzy shoplifter trial.

Although me and Måns will be in Barcelona for MWC, Bambuser will of course send a team to cover the whole thing, baptized by TPB to "The Spectrial"

We will be broadcasting live as much as possible during as many days as we can, to provide you with the best information possible. But we also want you to participate in the discussion by speaking your mind live to the streets of Stockholm regardless of where in the world you are.

Sign up for a free account on Bambuser and fire up a live stream from your mobile phone or webcam. Share your opinion and interact with others. Remember to tag all your broadcasts with "TPB". As many streams as possible will be projected onto a wall of a building opposite to the Court House accompanied by the audio from our PA-system. Share your opinions - it matters.

Official site for the Spectrial; trial.thepiratebay.org
Bambuser channel; Spectrial

p.s Of course everyone should feel free to KOPIMI(copy the live broadcast) by embedding the broadcast player on your site or blog d.s

TV4 use Bambuser to do Live broadcasting in fullscreen on national TV!

This evening Swedish TV4 went all the way when they used Bambuser as a part of their Live talk show "Kvällsöppet" on national TV! Our service was used to provide a live feed from the home of blogger Marcus Birro who couldn't be there in person but took part in the discussion from a distance. The Bambuser stream was broadcasted live in fullscreen as well as on a studio monitor. We're truly excited about this and give mad props to TV4!

(At the end of the clip: note the big screen monitor to the left as well...)

Late last year TV4 used Bambuser to broadcast live from The Grande Finale of Swedish Idol2009.

Slowly we are seeing a fantastic merge of how the traditional and new broadcasting technologies can come together.

Way to go TV4!

Cheers

The Road to Eurovision

TT Spektra (a part of the the largest news agency in Sweden - www.tt.se) teams up with us in order to provide live coverage of one of the largest events in Sweden this year "Melodifestivalen 2009". Over the coming 4 weeks two of their mobile journalists will use Bambuser to broadcast live shows and interviews with artists and celebrities. 17 Swedish newspapers will use the format for their special Melodifestivalen-sites.

- Bambuser is a great tool for live-broadcasting from the field. Through the live-chat that is integrated in the player viewers can interact with our journalists, hence influence the outcome of the production, says Niklas Larson, VP Digital Media TT-Spektra

Of course we're really excited to see what they will come up with and we suggest you bring out the pop-corn and soda and tune in to watch.

May the Winner take it all!

Support for Windows Mobile

In addition to the Symbian clients, we've got a new client for Windows Mobile, too. It is not yet as well-polished as the Symbian version, but we still hope that you find it usable!

Due to the large difference between Windows Mobile phones, we can't guarantee that it works on every device, but we've had success with at least these devices:
  • Samsung SGH-i780
  • HTC Touch Diamond
  • HTC Touch Pro
  • Sony-Ericsson XPERIA X1
It may work on other Windows Mobile 6 devices too, so if you're feeling adventurous you may want to give it a shot anyway. Please let us know about your experiences!

New Symbian Clients

Today we released new versions of the mobile clients for Symbian. The main new features are:
  • Much improved video quality on many S60 3rd ed phones
  • It is now Symbian Signed on S60 3rd ed, so you won't have any problems with "Certificate error" when installing it
  • GPS-based geotagging built in, without having to manually sign and install separate components
  • Network based positioning on many S60 3rd ed phones, no GPS required
  • Assorted UI details and bug fixes
  • Auto updating, so you won't have to manually fetch new versions later on (we've got a lot of new things planned for you!)
Since the earlier versions weren't Symbian Signed, the new signed version can't bring over your settings from the previous version, but later updates will work just fine.

Stay tuned for more...

Integration with Friendfeed, Identi.ca and Tumblr

Early on we added notification options for the microblogging services Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce, so that your friends on these platforms get to know when you have something to show them via Bambuser. Many of you have appreciated this and now it's time to throw a few more services into the mix.

In the last few days we added support for Friendfeed, a social network aggregator, Identi.ca, a node in the Laconica open source microblogging initiative and Tumblr, a short-form scrapbook-like blogging service.

On all of these platforms we post one notification for each of your broadcasts. In most cases a text-only post with the title you've set for the broadcast and a link to the video. The Friendfeed API however, allows us to post a preview thumbnail, which we do when possible. Tumblr gives us the freedom to put the video player in the post so that your visitors can watch the broadcast directly on your blog.

If you are using any of these services, try this out via your settings page and let us know what you think!

Bambuser to be tested in public safety

Together with Jonas Landgren and Fredrik Bergstrand from Viktoria Institute, Bambuser will be exploring the usage of mobile live video for public safety.

A new research project on using live video streaming to improve emergency response work. This new project started 1st of September and is a collaboration between Viktoria Institute, the Road Traffic Safety Institute – SAFER, Lindholmen Science Park´s Security Arena, the Swedish Road Authority, the Rescue Services in Gothenburg and the Regional Paramedic Services.

The project seeks to explore how live video data from mobile and stationary cameras could be used in order to provide improved situational awareness and collaboration among the response actors involved in traffic accidents response work.

In this project, Bambuser will provide the live mobile video broadcasting capabilities necessary to provide on-location live video that will be broadcasted across the response actor network. Having Bambuser as a key technology and service provider is fundamental for the practical field experiments that will be conducted with the end-user organizations later this autumn.

Press Conference: Kistefos Venture Capital invests in Bambuser

Press Release Malmö July 24

Norwegian Kistefos Venture Capital invest Swedish Bambuser

The Swedish video service Bambuser, which makes it possible for anyone to broadcast live video directly from their mobile phones out to thousands of viewers on the Internet, Norwegian Kistefos Venture Capital is now as a partner.

"Now we are getting the financial means to develop and make Bambuser global," says Bambusers founder and visionary leader Måns Adler. "Bambuser is similar to YouTube, only live, and we already have thousands of users, from the blog sphere for example sometimesdaily.com´s Amanda Congdon and musicians such as Adam Tensta, to major media players like "Svenska Dagbladet", "France24" and MySpace Nordic.

"Bambuser is one of the most exciting projects right now, says new chairman Alex Munch-Thore." Within Kistefos we are studying closely how quickly the media landscape is changing. Bambuser would have been impossible to even imagine about a few years ago and, of course, we want to be a part of and invest in the future of media technology and its business opportunities. "

Måns Adler and Jonas Vig, as two of the founders of Bambuser, was listed by Internetworld already in april as this year's entrepreneurs and highlighted in Swedish business magazine "Veckans Affärer" as next up and rising stars on th swedish entrepreneurial scene. Now, they have taken a further step towards their vision.

"The cell phone is the hub of our lives today, and through our service it will be complete as the communication tool in the social media world. You can not just call, send e-mail, chat, surf with it. Now you can also broadcast video in real-time through your own mobile. Your friends can hold dialogue with you when you send and follow you in your daily life when you want. It may be on his way to an interview to show that you are nervous, when you tips of your girlfriend on his way to Tokyo, prom or as a press conference like today, "said Måns Adler.

Bambuser as a service is also a great asset and a strength for both internal communcation and external communication channel for business.

"It's a benefit to use Bambuser in our work. We have won many cases, thanks to the use of Bambuser as part of our creative suggestions and we have recommended many of our clients to use the service in different contexts," says Brit Stakston, kommunikationskonsult on JMW in Stockholm as early tested the service and who quickly congratulated Bambuser to the new opportunities that this will mean for the company.

The agreement was signed on tuesday and means that Kistefos Venture Capital becomes a partner and simultaneously makes a significant financial injection to the company. Alex Munch-Thore also becomes new chairman of the board. Kistefos invest up to 15 million swedish kronor (2.5 MUSD) on a pre-money valuation at 47.5 MSEK (approx. 8 MUSD)

Bambuser and TeamSolde

The best coffe bar in Malmö, had made a promise to one of their customers that they would cycle the swedish classic Vättern Runt. It all became a hype in Malmö and a lot of sponsors jumped in to be a part of the show. Bambuser was used during their 300km long race, and broadcasted on a computer in the coffee bar for customers and sponsors to watch, and a virtual cheering club was formed in the chat...

Sending chat messages

Some of you using Mac OS X in combination with Firefox 3.0 Release Candidate 1 might have had problems submitting messages to the chat rooms. We are investigating why this combination of browser and OS does not respond to the enter key in our chat application. Firefox 3 RC1 on Windows is not affected, nor is any other browsers we have tried.

If you are affected by this, try using your mouse and click the newly added "send" button on the righthand side of the comment line instead.
